Auckland economic update January 2024

An overview of the Auckland economy for January 2024, in charts and graphs and with some commentary.

Highlights include:

  • real* value of imports by seaports for the year ended November 2023 was $32.0 billion, which was 5.4% lower than the year ended November 2022, but 9.3% higher than 5 years ago; for the rest of New Zealand, the figure was $34.7 billion (13.8% lower than a year ago)
  • average weekly rent for the month of October 2023 was $671 (2.7% higher than October 2022, but still lower than five years ago); for the rest of New Zealand, the figure was $557 (similar to the last three years)
  • number of houses sold for the year ended November 2023 was 19,755 (7% lower than a year prior, but rising for six months in a row)
  • median house price for the month of November 2023 was $1,052,000 (6% lower than a year prior, in real* dollars; 29% below the 2021 peak; 5% below seven years ago; slightly above the last several months)
  • consumer confidence index in the quarter ended December 2023 was 91.5 (its highest since March 2022, but below the levels of 2009 to 2021).

*Note: real dollars are after adjusting for the effects of inflation each quarter.
