Te taiao taiwhenua
Auckland’s natural environment is diverse and magnificent, from harbours, lakes and streams to productive soils, indigenous forest, bush ranges and islands.
Life in Auckland is supported and sustained by our natural environment, it is central to our identity and a main reason that people choose to visit, live, work and play here. For that reason it is important to understand what is happening in the environment and to be able to provide robust evidence for decision-making.

The RIMU environment teams carry out monitoring across the region to determine the health of the environment, to track changes in that health and to identify issues. We also carry out research, to improve our understanding of the environment, how it works and how our decisions influence environmental outcomes. Information from monitoring and research programmes helps to inform decisions for current and future Auckland.
Auckland Council has been collecting information about Auckland’s environment for more than 30 years. Our comprehensive monitoring programmes help build a picture of the health of Auckland’s environment.
Auckland Council has more than 1000 environmental monitoring sites around the region, set up to help us track changes and make improvements where they are needed.
Selected current research projects
We produce a range of environment related publications.
Report cards provide information on the state of Auckland's freshwater, marine, air, plants and animals, and land environments in your local area. We also publish cards about Auckland's population (one card for each local board), the city's capacity for growth and quality of life.
