Lake Pupuke is an Auckland Premier Park and the only deep volcanic lake in the region. There has been a recent deterioration in lake health. To address this RIMU has developed a collaborative project with Healthy Waters, the CawthronInstitute, and Project Baseline, an international NGO focused on using citizen science-driven monitoring to achieve better outcomes for aquatic environments.

Issue: Auckland’s rapidly growing city centre Auckland’s citycentre is rapidly growing. Growth has added environmental, social and structural pressures, including deteriorating air and water quality and increased strain on dated infrastructure. To help the city centre to adapt, to start climate action and to improve mobility, an urban design strategy named Access for Everyone (A4E) has been developed by Auckland Council’s Design Office.

Climate change in Auckland The Auckland heat vulnerability index was developed as part of the climate change risk assessment (CCRA), used as evidence for Auckland Council’s Climate Action Framework (ACAF). It used national climate change projections and developed a range of scenarios for climate change impacts, developed by NIWA for Auckland Council. The representative concentration pathway (RCP) 8.

Auckland Council undertakes a range of pest monitoring designed to detect any changes in invasive mammal population or species composition and provides an early indication of any new species present. This allows a better understanding of the response in the targeted area and the effectiveness of the control techniques that are being used. Tracking tunnels and chew cards are two different methods that are commonly used to monitor pests in urban forest environments.
