The streams and lakes of Auckland encompass all the surface freshwater for the region’s 4900km² area, from Wellsford in the north to Franklin in the south. With an estimated 16,500km of flowing streams and 72 lakes, these freshwater water bodies represent a significant part of Auckland’s natural environment. Streams and lakes are often fed from the groundwater beneath.
